To contain and prevent the spread of COVID-19 (Coronavirus Disease 2019), medical providers across the country have adopted specific infection-control protocols. Healthcare facilities, including Hospice care centers, are implementing adaptive measures to ensure the continuity of their services amid the pandemic.
Below are some of the ways in which Hospices have changed their policies and practices to adapt to COVID-19:
Limited Hospice Visitation Policies
In light of the pandemic, most Hospice care centers are now strictly limiting the number of visitors per patient. In some facilities, only one relative may visit a Hospice patient at a time. These policies are becoming very strict to protect all involved (patients, visitors, and healthcare workers), so check with the Hospice before you go and visit your loved one.
Visitors are likely to have a temperature-check before entering the Hospice care center. Those who show symptoms of COVID-19 are prohibited from entering the facility and are referred to medical care.
Visitors must wear face masks. They are also reminded to practice hand hygiene while inside the Hospice care center.
Infection-Control Hygiene Measures
Hospice care centers will provide supplies for hand hygiene, such as hand sanitizers. Everyone is also reminded to practice social distancing.
Any person entering a Hospice care center will be asked several questions. These questions include information about their travel history, history of COVID-19 exposure, residence, and experience of any COVID-19 symptom.
Healthcare workers and Hospice volunteers who experience any COVID-19 symptom are also prohibited from reporting to the facility or location.
Changes in Practices and Services
The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in dramatic changes in healthcare activities. Hospice care centers are experiencing a drastic reduction in requests for admission, and many Hospice patients are opting for home Hospice care instead. Consequently, some Hospice staff members are transferring from inpatient to home care services.
Many Hospice care centers are no longer using volunteers. Depending on local guidelines and the prevalence of COVID-19 in the community, there may be a total restriction on volunteers. Those who wish to continue to serve Hospices are encouraged to perform their services via phone or other electronic devices.
